چکیده

C harles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 (the same day as President Abraham Lincoln). In 1859 Darwin published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1), his most important book and the one by which he has become best known to posterity. Thus, 2009 is a double anniversary: the 200th of Darwin’s birth and the sesquicentenary of Origin. Darwin is deservedly credited as the originator of the modern theory of evolution. In Origin he gathered the best available evidence for evolution: 2 chapters dedicated to the geological record, 2 chapters to biogeography, and 1 chapter to comparative anatomy and embryology. The other 9 chapters (I–VIII and XIII) are mostly dedicated to natural selection, the process that accounts for the adaptation, common descent, and diversity of organisms. He explains how natural selection works, discusses the role of hereditary variation (the mechanics of which were not well understood in Darwin’s time), and considers possible objections to his theory.

Darwin would have loved DNA: celebrating Darwin 200.

Analysis of DNA sequences now plays a key role in evolutionary biology research. If Darwin were to come back today, I think he would be absolutely delighted with molecular evolutionary genetics, for three reasons. First, it solved one of the greatest problems for his theory of evolution by natural selection. Second, it gives us a tool that can be used to investigate many of the questions he fou...

CAM - BRAIN The Evolutionary Engineering of a Billion Neuron Artificial Brain by 2001 which Grows / Evolves at Electronic Speeds inside a Cellular Automata

A "Darwin Machine" is defined to be a piece of hardware that evolves its own architecture at electronic speeds. A Darwin Machine is an example of "Evolutionary Engineering", which in turn is defined to be the building of complex structures and dynamics using evolutionary methods. The author believes that evolutionary techniques will dominate 21st century engineering, especially molecular scale ...

Darwin television celebrations begin

The double anniversary next year, which marks the 150th anniversary of the first publication of the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin and the bicentenary of his birth, has provided the media with a welcome peg to celebrate the naturalist's enormous contribution to modern biology. While the BBC is planning several programmes, beginning later this year, Channel 4, a commercial British televisio...
